Mentor Training Days

National Standard/Bikeability scheme guidelines highlight the importance of mentoring for all Bikeability schemes. In addition to being a requirement of National Standard schemes, having mentors in place creates a sense of progression and professional development within an organisation. Mentors can also support provisionally accredited instructors ensuring that when they are assessed by the Instructor Training Provider they are more likely to pass with fewer assessed sessions.

Cycle Training UK has had a mentoring scheme in place since the company’s inception in 1998 and delivers a popular one day mentor training day from their central London training centre.

Professional Development Modules

“All scheme organisers must ensure that they have a mechanism for monitoring instructor’s performance and refreshing training” - according to the Adult Cycle Training guide for organisers and instructors. As more and more schemes are delivering Bikeability training and are employing teams of instructors it is vital that instructors’ skills are updated and that the quality of their delivery is maintained. INSET (IN SErvice Training) is a tried and tested mechanisms for doing this (used in schools to keep up teachers’ skills).By upgrading their skills instructors will be able to teach varied courses which will make their job more dynamic and will enable your scheme to promote cycling to different clients in a variety of ways.
